EXPERIENCE
Tan Sri Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun graduated from the University of Malaya with an LLB (Hons) degree in 1986 and was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya on 27 February 1987. He furthered his legal education at King’s College, University of London, where he obtained his Master of Law degree with merit in 1990, specialising in Corporate and Commercial Law.
With nearly four decades of legal practice, Tan Sri Azhar has cultivated comprehensive expertise as an Advocate & Solicitor, currently focussing his practice on litigation and corporate matters. His deep understanding of Malaysian law spans multiple disciplines, positioning him as a versatile practitioner capable of handling intricate legal challenges across various sectors. Throughout his career, he has also been actively involved as a human rights activist, engaging in pro bono public interest litigation and electoral law matters, demonstrating his commitment to advancing justice and democratic principles.
As a recognised thought leader in the legal community, Tan Sri Azhar has contributed extensively to legal discourse through his scholarly work. He has delivered authoritative papers on corporate insolvencies, bankruptcies, land laws, human rights and constitutional matters at various seminars and professional development courses, sharing his insights with fellow practitioners and shaping legal understanding in these critical areas.
Beyond his legal practice, Tan Sri Azhar has distinguished himself through prominent public service roles that demonstrate his commitment to Malaysia’s democratic institutions and legal framework. He served as Chairman of the Malaysian Election Commission from 2018 to 2020, overseeing crucial electoral processes during a pivotal period in Malaysian politics. Subsequently, he held the esteemed position of Speaker of the Malaysian House of Representatives from 2020 to 2022, where he presided over parliamentary proceedings and contributed to the strengthening of democratic governance.
Currently, Tan Sri Azhar serves as an Arbitrator at the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC), bringing his extensive legal experience and institutional knowledge to the resolution of commercial disputes. His unique combination of private practice expertise, constitutional knowledge and public service experience makes him a distinguished figure in Malaysia’s legal landscape, respected both for his technical proficiency and his dedication to the rule of law.
